Meet CFI Jake Lodeen
CFI Jake is answering your questions!
If you saw our mini highlight on Jake last year, you’ll know he’s no stranger to Rogue Aviation. Jake recently became an officer and pilot for the Golden Gate Division of the California Highway Patrol where he completed their three-phase pilot training program. (COVID-safe handshake included!)
This week, we’re taking you in-depth on his passion for flying and his #flyrogue journey with a Q&A!
When did you start flying with Rogue Aviation, and why?
I started flying with Rogue Aviation in January of 2019. I met James through the Robinson Safety Course, and he gave me a tour of the operation at Rogue Aviation. I was immediately impressed with how organized the flight school was and how well maintained all their aircraft were. Also their rental program was appealing to me because it enabled me the opportunity to build my flight time which many other flight schools do not offer. I obtained my instrument rating, commercial certificate, and CFI certificate with Rogue Aviation. I was extremely well prepared for all of my check rides.
How long have you been flying, and when did you start?
I have been flying for 4 years, all of which have been in helicopters. I took my first lesson in July of 2017 and was immediately hooked. I dove right into my private license. After receiving my private certificate, I was eager to learn more and continue my training so I went straight into my instrument rating, and later commercial and CFI. All of my flight experience is in helicopters, and after my first flight, I knew I made the right choice.
Why did you want to be a pilot?
I am a law enforcement officer and had aspirations to get into the aviation unit with my department as a helicopter pilot. I had no aviation background but knew that I would enjoy it so I set out to find what I needed to do to become a pilot. My department required its helicopter pilots to have a commercial certificate with an instrument rating and 300 hours PIC in helicopters. After doing some research, and with the help of pilots in my department, I learned that with dedication it would be possible. Three and a half years later, I was offered the job as a helicopter pilot with my department, and believe me, it was worth every bit.
Why did you choose to teach with Rogue Aviation?
To me, it was a no brainer. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to become a CFI at Rogue Aviation and being a part of the excellent training programs that Rogue Aviation offers was truly rewarding. Not to mention, you develop as a pilot when you begin teaching. The time I spent as an instructor in addition to the top notch training I received at Rogue Aviation prepared me for the training program I went through when I was hired as a law enforcement pilot.
What is your favorite part about flying? Favorite part about teaching?
The places and things you can see from a helicopter are unlike anything in the world. In fact, many of the things you get to do in a helicopter can’t be done in any other type of aircraft. The opportunities are limitless. Since I have to pick a favorite thing, it would be flying the coast low level. There is nothing like it, and it’s such an escape. Every time I get to do that, I think about how awesome it is to fly helicopters.
What tips would you like to share for future pilots?
Be persistent, because the end result is absolutely worth it. Flying a helicopter is not easy, but it can be done by anybody. Don't get frustrated when things become difficult, and take it one day at a time. After all, you are doing one of the coolest things in the world! Also, don't ever become complacent. Take every flight as a learning opportunity and take your time.
What's your favorite part about being a pilot?
I get to fly law enforcement missions one minute, and the next, I could perform a med-evac mission to transport somebody to the hospital. My job is very diverse, and that's what I love about it. Flying a helicopter is my passion, and I get to do it every day as my job thanks to my training and experience at Rogue Aviation.
